Although we are excited to resume adult singing lessons in our Central London premises, we have met many new students during lockdown who are continuing to learn with a vocal coach online. Many musicians find this approach to be convenient, cost-effective and less time consuming as there is no need to travel. Not to mention, you can learn with any vocal coach, no matter where they are in the world. This way, you can find one that best suits your needs, and ensure you have a real connection with them. There are some challenges to online learning, so we have put together this guide to help you make the most of it.

Take Advantage of Technology

Instead of focusing on what online lessons lack compared to face-to-face study, explore the options you do have available! For example, you can easily record your lessons from Skype or Zoom and replay them as you practice. Share recordings, musical ideas and other resources instantly over online chat. If you have musical equipment you’d like to use in your lesson, it’ll be much easier to access it from home instead of carrying it with you, risking potential damage while travelling. There are so many creative ways that technology can enhance your learning process.

Focus on Good Quality Audio and Video

Your body is your instrument, so it’s important that your vocal coach can accurately see and hear what you are doing. Every time you set up for the lesson, ensure you have good lighting, and your vocal coach can see your face and the top half of your body. Seeing your posture, the way you use your mouth and engage your breath while singing will help us pinpoint any unhealthy practices or habits that may hinder your progress. Or affirm that you are applying the techniques correctly.

If you can, make sure to use a microphone for the best audio reproduction. It’s those little nuances that help us understand your tone, pitch, and suggest the best exercises for improvement. Creating the best representation of your singing through quality audio and video will help you make the most of working with a vocal coach online.

Find a Comfortable Space to Practice

At London Singing Institute, we have worked hard to create a comfortable, encouraging environment for all singers to thrive in. Our in-person lessons are held in excellent practice spaces where you can sing to your heart’s content.

When you’re learning online, this may not always be the case. Finding a space to practice can be a challenge, especially for those who live with partners, friends or family. Sometimes, the best thing to do is to have a conversation with people you live with and explain that you’ll need some alone time for your lessons. Having a dedicated room or even a smaller space in a room where you feel comfortable singing will ensure you can enjoy your online adult singing lessons to the fullest.

Eliminate Distractions

An extension of finding a comfortable practice space, learning with a vocal coach online will be far more effective if you eliminate distractions. Our phones and laptops provide a great opportunity for learning and connecting with others, yet they can also distract us from our singing goals. While you’re learning, mute social media notifications, emails and put your phone on silent. This is your time to really focus on your singing and develop as an artist, therefore, you deserve to dedicate this time to yourself. Messages and notifications can wait, unless it’s an emergency, of course.

Equally, as you decide on a dedicated practice space, choose one where you are not distracted by other people, neighbours or outside noise. Giving your full focus to the lesson will make it much easier to progress with a vocal coach online.

Set Goals and Reflect on Your Progress

Like with any learning process, it’s important to set goals and keep accountable to make sure you are progressing. The great thing about online lessons is that, again, you can record them and, therefore, have a library of how your voice has progressed so far. We would recommend reflecting on those recordings and objectively thinking about what you like or don’t like about them. Don’t be too hard on yourself and remind yourself you’re on a journey – remember to celebrate the qualities you actually love about your voice.

It’s important that you also discuss your progress with your vocal coach online. They will be able to tailor the lessons in a way that helps you achieve your goals, and they will also help to keep you on track.

Some of our favourite ways to encourage students to set and achieve goals is to keep it realistic, yet challenging, following these tips:

Don’t be afraid to pick a song that seems a little out of reach, but make sure this is a fun challenge, rather than something that feels unattainable
Keep a regular practice schedule – just half an hour each day is enough to keep developing that stunning vocal
Practice deliberately. At the start of each session, figure out what you want to achieve and areas that you need to focus on the most and pay special attention to those
Lastly, record yourself and listen back. This can be daunting, but it’s important that you get used to the sound of your own voice and learn to be objective about it. Embrace the unique, natural qualities of your voice and try to spot the areas to improve on
