When people think of songs, love songs are often the first thing that comes to mind.

They have also been among the most dominant and successful types of songs on music charts around the world.

But why is love the most sung-about theme in music and love songs remained so powerful and popular across so many decades?

Love for Each Other

Every person experiences love in different ways, and no matter how much languages and cultures may differ, love is something that people everywhere can feel and understand.

Love between people is not like a narrow or highly specific subject that only speaks to one group.

It is something that can be understood across cultures, generations and personal backgrounds.

This is one of the reasons why love songs have such a wide audience.

Most listeners can relate to them in some way.

Love also has the power to create very strong emotions.

Joy, longing, excitement, jealousy, heartbreak and hope can all come from love.

Love for Friends

When people talk about love, we often think about romantic relationships.

But as I grow older, I realise that love also exists in many other forms, especially in the friendships we build throughout our lives.

This kind of love is called platonic love. It simply means the love we have for our friends.

It is not romantic, but it is deep in a different way.

It is built on trust, care, support, and just being there for each other through different seasons of life.

Friendship is something that grows naturally.

We do not always notice it happening, but slowly, certain people become very important to us without even trying.

When I think about friendship, I do not think about big events or expensive memories.

I think about the small, simple moments that somehow stay with you for a long time.

Back in the Philippines during my high school years, my friends and I would often sit by the roadside after school.

One of us would bring a guitar, another would bring a songbook, and we would just spend time singing together.

We did not have plans or money to go anywhere fancy.

We were just there, sitting together, laughing, singing out of tune, and talking about random things in life.

At that time, it felt so normal.

Just part of everyday life.

But looking back now, I realise those were actually some of the best memories I have.

It is funny how the simplest moments become the ones you remember the most.

Music was always part of those memories.

It brought us together in a very natural way.

We did not need to try hard or plan anything.

Once someone started playing a song, everything else just followed.

Sometimes, music says things that are hard to explain.

It carries feelings, memories, and even people.

Even now, when I hear certain songs, I immediately remember those moments and the friends I shared them with.

It is like being taken back in time for a few seconds.

Music has a way of doing that.

It keeps memories alive even when everything else changes.

I have been living in Dubai for over a decade now, and I do not go home to the Philippines very often.

Life gets busy, and time passes quickly.

But whenever I do go back, I always make sure to see my friends.

What I love is that even after so many years, things still feel the same.

We do not need time to “adjust” to each other.

We just meet, and everything feels familiar.

We laugh at the same jokes, talk about our lives now, and also remember the past.

It never feels forced or awkward.

In those moments, I realise something important.

True friendship is not about how often you talk or see each other.

It is about how strong the connection still feels, even after time and distance.

As we grow older, life becomes more busy.

We move to different places, focus on work, and take on more responsibilities.

Because of that, we do not always stay in touch the way we used to.

But real friendships do not disappear just because of time or distance.

Love for friends is shown in simple ways.

It is checking in on someone when they are not okay.

It is celebrating their wins.

It is listening when they need to talk.

And sometimes, it is just being there quietly.

Friendship may not always be the first thing people think of when they hear the word “love,” but it is one of the most real and pure forms of it.

It reminds me that some of the best parts of life are not big achievements, but the people we share everyday life with.

No matter where life takes us, some friendships stay.

They grow with us, they change with us, but they remain.

And to me, that is a kind of love worth holding on to.

Finding God in Difficult Seasons Through Music

The all too famous singer-songwriter, composer of the well-loved and accepted, “Piano Man”, spoke these words in an interview with Rolling Stones –
“I think music in itself is healing.

It’s an explosive expression of humanity.

It’s something we are all touched by.

No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.”

Music as an art form is something that transcends normal human comprehension.

Schools and conservatories all around the world are dedicated to providing a semblance of this knowledge, of the mysteries of this phenomenon that bridges “the sound played in time” with the “emotion” within which a person feels upon hearing that sound.

Over the years, many people have attempted to give multiple explanations as to why one feels the way they feel upon hearing a song, a beat, a melody or an instrumental piece of music and the effect it has on evoking feelings of nostalgia, anger, love, warmth or even regret.

Many have made the proposition that maybe the quality of the pitch is the key factor, for example a higher pitched sound brings excitement and joy whereas lower pitched tunes seem to appeal to the nostalgic elements of a person’s life, often making the listener introspect deeply as opposed to becoming overwhelmed with excitement.

Others, however, may stand on the side of the word painting that happens with the way words are put together to a tune, to try and make sense of a person’s life situation.

Whether one stays in one camp or the other, the fact remains that music permeates the very being of a person’s life, often the silent consoler of the weary and the broken hearted and an enthusiastic friend when life is all well.

Martin Luther, an early church reformer in the 16th century was a music enthusiast and often incorporated his writings to many famous tunes.

He writes –
“Music is one of the fairest and most glorious gifts of God, to which Satan is a bitter enemy; for it removes from the heart the weight of sorrow, and the fascination of evil thoughts.”

People all around the world are looking for answers, seeking peace and inner tranquility.

They search for reason and purpose and solutions to their life issues, many of which may probably never truly be satisfied.

This is however, when the gift of music makes its most impact, where though the situation doesn’t truly change, the strength with which a person moves past the point of his difficulty is because of the inspiration he finds in a piece of music.

Someone said that when words fail, music speaks and rightly so, because as Luther suggests, music becomes the balm with which God uses to heal the broken heart, give strength to the weary and weak, inspire courage and change in a person’s life and helps him connect to the divine through Scriptures personified through the lyrics of a song.

The words of a very famous song called “Still” by Hillsong Worship, writes the lines,

“When the oceans rise and thunders roar,
I will soar with You, Above the storm,
Father, You are King over the flood,
I will be still and know You are God.”

This has often been quoted as one of the most comforting songs ever written.

The words “oceans” and “thunders” are metaphors for the storms of life, the rough terrain that surrounds a person who may be going through depression, regret, anxiety, grief and loss and so on.

The author makes the assertion that regardless of how it looks on the outside, how things may seem to go from bad to worse, he is confident that his “Father”, which is a description of God Himself and the relationship he possesses with those who trust him, will carry Him through the situation.

The stillness the author experiences is the calm assurance that God is invested in his life and will not abandon him in his time of weakness but that God himself will help him navigate and strengthen his resolve to press on despite the situation.

Like this song, there are many more that speaks extensively to the life of a person, and when a person sings these lines in faith of the object of whom they sing about and they put their trust in this God, they find what Luther describes, “it[music] removes from the heart the weight of sorrow, and the fascination of evil thoughts.”

God uses the medium of music, a gift that permeates the divine with the mortal, to bring hope, spark creativity, generate a deep joy within, and alleviates the raging storm within each person’s heart.

A Final Word

Music is far more than a form of entertainment.

During some of life’s most difficult moments, it can offer comfort, encouragement and an opportunity for reflection.

Just as songs express the love people share with one another, love songs can also preserve memories and create lasting connections across generations.

In the same way, music can strengthen the warmth, affection and sense of belonging found in friendship, allowing people to build and celebrate those bonds through shared musical experiences.

Throughout history, music has helped people express emotions that are often difficult to put into words, particularly during times of uncertainty.

Christian music can also point listeners towards God’s promises, hope and faithfulness.

Finding peace does not necessarily mean that life’s difficulties disappear immediately.
