With so many different types of music out there, it can be difficult to pinpoint one that’s your favourite. But different personalities tend to be drawn to different styles of song.

Have you ever wondered what your favourite genre of music says about you?

We’ve got the answers (and they’re backed by science!)

Pop Music

Chances are, you’re the life and soul of the party, bubbly, excitable and fun. But you also suck at telling lies and lean towards a conventional lifestyle.

You might not be as artistic as you’d like, but you are secure in yourself and always ready to put in the hard work when it comes to reaching your goals.

Heavy Metal

At the opposite end of the music spectrum, we have almost the opposite personality style – no surprise there! Unlike extroverted pop fans, metal lovers are more introverted but very intuitive.

They can easily interpret the intangible and have a very creative, gentle soul. Heavy metal music offers an outlet for aggression so you can maintain your beautiful nature.

Classical

Interestingly, there is not much difference between the personality traits of metal fans and classical music lovers.

Perhaps those who align with classical music styles have a little more self-esteem than their metal mates, but they are also intuitive and creative. They also tend to be more intelligent than others and love to find patterns and simplicity in complex themes.

R’n’B

Are you a hopeless romantic or someone who wears their heart on their sleeve? We bet you’re a Rhythm and Blues fan!

You are also likely quite extroverted and outgoing, finding comfort in social situations and happily displaying a healthy range of emotions, no matter what the situation. You are more creative than pop fans, who share similar personality traits.

Hip-Hop

The cooler younger brother of RnB shares many of the extroverted social traits of their musical family. They are oozing self-esteem and prefer to listen to hard, clear facts rather than anything intuitive.

Indie

The personality difference between indie rock fans and metal rock is surprisingly big. Yes, you are all intuitive and creative, but indie personalities tend to be a little lazier and blunter than their gentle metal friends.

You get anxious, but you’re also a bit of a rebel and love a good debate. You are clever and able to negotiate challenges in a relaxed and flexible way.

Electronic Dance

If you like this kind of music and you don’t like big crowds and wild dancing, then you might have a problem! Chances are though, it’s where you come alive. You are an extrovert and clubs are your haven!

You are assertive, with an open mind – you are always looking for new experiences. You could probably be a little gentler with people, but that’s your inner mosher coming out!

Country

Love listening to people with guitars crying about heartbreak? You must be a country fan! Chances are though, you are far more emotionally stable and happy in your comfort zone.

You are not especially open to anything new and you are conservative in your opinions. You’re hard-working and outgoing – a fantastic combination!

Where’s The Evidence?

The study focused on something called “the big five personality traits”.

The theory is that everyone is somewhere on a spectrum of traits, and where they are on these spectrums determines what kind of music they like to listen to. The five traits are:

  • Agreeableness
  • Conscientiousness
  • Extraversion
  • Neuroticism
  • Openness

Every personality style mentioned in the above article falls somewhere in these five traits. The study worked out which personality traits each participant had and then made them choose their favourite musical genre. The results were surprisingly clear, showing a correlation between personality and musical choice.

Of course, there will always be people who buck the trend, and these results represent a very sweeping generalization. But we think you’ll probably recognize yourself a little bit in one of these descriptions.

So, what should you sing?

The big question is, does your singing voice match your favourite genre? Ideally, you want to sing songs that you enjoy to avoid getting bored.

If you want to train your voice to meet a certain genre, or you need help finding the style that best suits you, a musical coach can help. We know exactly where your voice falls on any musical scale and can work with you to perfect your technique. Get in touch to book your first singing lesson today.
